MY IDEA OF WHAT EATING ANIMALS BY JOHNATHAN FOER IS ABOUT

Animals Have Feelings Too

According to the ideas that are conceptualized in the reading, it is evident that the corporate companies tend to mistreat animals and they are being exposed for doing so. Not only do they have a tendency of doing so, but they are also likely to degrade them in ways that not only causes harm to them physically but also mentally. We, human beings, may believe that animals are inferior to us because we are the dominant species and because they don’t speak English nor are they able to communicate with us. (Foer 341) Although this is the case, there are cases where one tries to make it seem as if they are not as harsh to the animals as they seem. For example, some people refer to animals that are sick and dying as “downers” as ways of not making it look bad for what the situation really is. But think about it. Do we humans, the dominant species, have a tendency of using our “superiority” over the animals as an incentive to mistreat them? If so, why do you think this happens? Will this behavior continue or will there eventually be a change in the way we interact with animals?

The Reward Center

The reward center of our brain is basically the reason why we feel the sensation of wanting and going out of your way to get it. In this case, it’s fast food. When we want food or something else desired to us, our brain sends signals through our body saying “we want this because it feels good”. We release a chemical in our body called “opioids”. This is what makes us react to certain needs, before we eat a desired meal these opioids go off in our body that makes us crave. It’s the same reaction drug addicts get when they want the drug and they have to have it. And that’s where” instant reward” and “long term cost” comes in. sometimes people crave things for the moment  that we know is going to turn out bad in the end. When this takes place, that don’t really care for what happens in the future they just care for the good feeling they’re having right now, right this instant. This is why sometimes it’s almost impossible to back away for certain cravings.

keyword throughput

In the fast food nation, throughput was all about increasing the speed of assembly, about doing things faster in order the make more. It’s basically about how much you can make how fast. Throughput is also about cheapness. Workers no longer require training to have a job in the fast food restaurant. All the cashiers have to do is press the buttons with the pictures of what the customer’s order and the computer shows how much the meal cost and the exact change they should get back. The workers don’t need to understand math or any type of skill to do this job. Putting the meals also doesn’t require any skill since everything is already done for you. The order in which you put the food together is already there so there is no memory required as well. Throughput is very successful because business runs smoothly and in order and they don’t need to burn a lot of money to do so.

connections between "uniformity" and "obedience"

In Eric Schlosser's "Fast Food Nation",he speaks on uniformity in he fast food nation, which means to set order and make everything the same. for example, the way the food is made, where it comes from, and the temperature the food is being kept. Their is also another keyword he brings up in this book, and that is "Obedience". Obedience is used in this book mostly towards the workers. Its used to keep the workers in order and following directions. I believe these two keywords from Eric Schlosser's book have some unique similarities in the fast food nation. Obedience means to be obligated to do something or to follow instructions. This sounds a lot like uniformity because in uniformity you have to abide by certain rules. I believe these two keywords are similar because they both manifest the idea of  "control". In the fast food nation there needs to be a power of control to run a restaurant. if their is no control, it would be chaos. if their was no obedience in the workers, they would be able to do what they want and if that happened their would be no uniformity in the way the food is made. see how that connects? thats why i believe uniformity and obedience have a simular connection in the fast food nation

fast food nations "uniformity"

what does uniformity mean in the fast food nation? hmm.. you ever wondered why you would go to a fast food restaurant and order a burger and fries and it would taste the exact same way in the same restaurant in a different location? its weird right. well that uniformity for you.uniformity means to set order and for everything to be the same. but your probably wondering how the food taste so similar in this specific restaurant that you go to in all these different locations. its very obvious that science is involved. their are these people called taste engineers that creat these chemicals that are processed in these foods. this is the same chemical that makes the food taste so good and be so addictive. when they are frozen, their obligated to be set at a specific tempature to no taste altercations can be made to these foods. so basically uniformity is created to keep things stabilized.
